LEADERSHIP FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING!
Government, working with private business and non-profit organizations,
must be more creative in offering our people a range of affordable housing
opportunities. In 1990-1992, my administration initiated senior housing
in Captain Cook and Waimea and completed the first affordable housing project
in Waikoloa. As your Mayor, I will continue to pursue affordable housing
projects that benefit our working people and senior citizens.
As your State Senator, I fought for and supported:
- Appropriations to the Hawai'i Housing Finance and Development Corp. to work with private and non-profit groups to plan and construct affordable housing
- Establishment of a joint legislative housing and homeless task force to further identify near-term solutions to Hawai'i's affordable housing and homeless problem
- Construction and improvements at Lanakila Homes in Hilo
- Construction and improvements at Kahale Kahalu'u in Kailua-Kona
- Measures to provide incentives to increase the supply of low-income rental housing units
I have supported many more intiatives for affordable housing. These are only a few of the recent highlights.
