Kona Run Promotes Voter Awareness
Helps Family In Need
The West Hawai'i Friends of Lorraine For Mayor organized a 5K/10K Run For Voter Registration June 8 that not only promoted voter registration and awareness, but also raised money to assist the Hauanio family.
Two years ago, Cata and Kaleo Hauanio adopted two sons, Koa age 5 and Nalu age 4, who suffer attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and aggressive behaviors most likely due to exposure to drugs and alcohol before birth.
To properly evaluate the young boys' medical conditions and determine the best treatment, the family needs to raise $29,000 for testing at the Amen Clinic in California, which specializes in SPECT imaging of the brain. A fund, Friends of Koa and Nalu, has been established at the Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union.
Through the efforts of our West Hawai'i team and members of the community who participated in the run, we were able to donate $567 to the Friends of Koa and Nalu.
During the event, we introduced our "Recycle Bags" and provided information about Sen. Inouye's efforts as the State Senate's chief negotiator for the landmark and very successful "Bottle Bill." Lorraine continues to strongly advocate for recycling and many initiatives to promote a sustainable future for our community.
We thank our West Hawai'i team and the people of West Hawai'i for supporting voter awareness, recycling and assistance for those in need.
