LEADERSHIP FOR OUR UNIVERSITY!

A comprehensive university system, including UH-Hilo, the UH-West Hawai'i campus, NHERC, Hawai'i Community College and Distance Learning Centers, is one of our County's most important assets, offering educational, cultural and employment opportunities for our people. As your Mayor, I will work in cooperation with the university system, the State Legislature and the Governor to continue the growth and development of our outstanding university programs. I will continue to be an aggressive advocate for our university and will establish County-university partnerships to address community needs.

As your State Senator, I fought for and supported:

• Establishment and funding for a permanent UH-West Hawai'i Campus
• Construction of the Student Life and Events Center
• Construction of the US Geological Survey Building
• Construction of the North Hawai'i Educational Resource Center
• Construction of the Sciences and Technology Building
• Construction of the College of Pharmacy Building
• Improvements to the Hawaiian Language Building
• Renovations and additions to the Campus Center
• Expansion of Hawai'i Community College on a new campus mauka of Komohana Street
• Establishment of the Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center
• Development of the University Park of Science and Technology
• Development of the Institute of Tropical Forestry
• Establishment of the Pacific Aquaculture Coastal Resource Center
